Born in 1967, Prof. Markus Thewes is scientific consultant (of
counsel) for Maidl Tunnelconsultants GmbH.

Markus Thewes is the Head of the Institute for Construction
Technology, Tunnelling and Construction Management at the Ruhr
University Bochum. He has more than 17 years of experience in
several areas of the tunnelling industry. He studied at the RWTH
Aachen and he received his PhD in 1999 as external Doctor at the
Bergischen Universität Wuppertal. In Philipp Holzmann AG he was
tunnelling structural engineer as well as construction manager and
site manager in international tunnel projects. For the office
Zerna Ingenieure he worked as planner for subway construction. For
the STUVA in Cologne, he leaded research projects and the
preparation of expert reports. At the Ruhr-University Bochum, he
teaches construction management and tunnelling and utility
engineering. The research at the Institute comprises mechanised
and shotcrete tunnelling, safety, risk management, life cycle
costs as well as operation and maintenance. Since 2002, Prof.
Thewes has participated as consultant and expert in more than 40
projects, among others for courts and international Clients. He
belongs to the Deutsche Ausschuss für Unterirdisches Bauen (DAUB)
(German Committee for Underground Construction) and the
supervisory board of the Institut für Unterirdische Infrastruktur
(IKT) (Institute for Underground Infrastructure). He is member of
the editorial board of the journal "Tunnelling and Underground
Space Technology" (TUST).
